EAL

Ellesmere is proud to offer an International education to all our students whether from the UK or overseas. There are students from some 20 different nations in the school, who together create a truly international community.

English for International Students

A good level of English is an absolute necessity, so international students receive as much help as they need to bring their English up to the level required.

The EAL department aims to improve students' English as quickly as possible so that they can fully participate in all lessons. An experienced group of teachers assess student needs and create effective learning programmes so that students can be successful in their courses and exams.

Lessons are in small groups to develop confidence in English and to make sure students receive the instruction they need. Most EAL students are successful in their mainstream subjects and do well in their exams.

IELTS: International English Language Testing System for University Entrance

All A Level international students take the IELTS exam for university entrance. This year all our students were successful in gaining the IELTS scores needed for entry into top courses at universities. Some achieved scores of 8.5 in speaking and reading and overall scores of 7.5 and 8.

We have particular experience with students who enter with a low level of English, bringing them to university entrance requirements within two years.

IGCSE English as a Second Language

Students in year 11 may take this exam. Grades A and B are accepted by many universities as the language entry requirement.

Intensive English Language Development Programme

The Intensive English language development programme is for a small group of year 11 students who enter the college with a low level of English. They are taught in small groups in all subjects throughout the year. Language development is rapid and these students are able to take the IGCSE English as a Second Language exam and four other GCSE subjects at the end of the year.
