LAMDA

The London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art (LAMDA) is the largest Speech and Drama awarding body in the UK. LAMDA examinations are designed to equip pupils, whatever their age and aspirations, with a range of skills that will serve them through life. Through one-to-one (or one-to-two) tuition, pupils are encouraged to:

• Unlock their imagination and creative thinking;
• Develop memory and communications skills;
• Build self-confidence and self-esteem; and
• Acquire skill certification for career development.

Pupils can enter for Graded Examinations in the following subjects:

• Acting
• Devised Drama
• Mime
• Musical Theatre
• Verse and Prose
• Reading for Performance
• Public Speaking

Some pupils prefer not to take examinations but simply use the sessions to help achieve other goals, such as audition preparation and skill-building in areas such as public speaking or voice work. Since 2008, Advanced Grade exams (grades 6-8) have been included in the UCAS tariff and pupils can gain between 20 and 65 points depending on grade and pass mark. Exams taken in more than one subject will accumulate UCAS points. For example, a pupil could take Grade 8 in Acting and Public Speaking, achieve a distinction in both and be awarded 130 points.

Pupils will be assigned to one of the two specialist teachers:

• Mrs Lesley Lear provides lessons in LAMDA and ESB Spoken English, LAMDA Verse & Prose, ESB Senior Interview and Presentation Skills Course;

• Ms Claire Thompson provides lessons in LAMDA Acting, Mime, Devised Drama, Musical Theatre or Reading for Performance.

Pupils will attend ten lessons per term at a charge of £125 per term, payable via the school bill. Lessons for senior pupils can be held outside of the normal lesson time where possible. A term's notice is required if cancelling lessons.

Examination sessions are held at the school twice a year, in February and June. Examination costs vary depending on the grade. Foundation grades cost approximately £25 and advance grades approximately £55.
