Physical Education

Physical Education has a unique contribution to make to the total education of an individual. At Ellesmere College, we aim to maintain and stimulate pupils' interest and enjoyment in an extensive range of physical activities. We offer all our pupils the opportunity to develop physical skills, fitness and to enable gifted games players and athletes to pursue their chosen sport to high levels of achievement.

All pupils at Key Stage 2, 3 and 4 will have one double PE lesson per week, which is 70 minutes in duration. The PE curriculum ensures that all pupils follow as wide a range of activities as possible. The department strongly believe that young people should be given the knowledge to help them lead a healthy active lifestyle whilst in school and in the future.

During Key Stage 2 pupils will experience the following activities:
  • Fundamental Motor Skills Programme Gymnastics
  • Games Skills
  • Indoor Athletics
  • Net Games
  • Athletics
  • Swimming (additional double lesson per week)
During Key Stage 3 and 4 pupils will experience the following activities:
  • Games Skills
  • Swimming
  • Fitness and Fitness Testing
  • Badminton
  • Basketball

We offer both GCSE and A Level PE, and BTEC as examination courses. Both are very popular subjects. They enable pupils to experience and promote the value of exercise and healthy living. Furthermore, planning and evaluating sports performances, pupils increase their knowledge of physical activity.

GCSE PE (OCR SYLLABUS)

Pupils are assessed in a range of different practical activities with their best four scores counting towards 60% of their final grade. Pupils also have to complete two controlled assessments, which adds to the practical element.

Pupils study various aspects of health, fitness, anatomy and physiology theoretically over their two years on the course, which is then assessed during a 2 x 1 hour examinations at the end of the subject, which makes up the remaining 40% of the marks.

A Level PE (OCR SYLLABUS)

At AS Level pupils will study Anatomy and Physiology, Movement Skills and Socio-cultural Studies and a Practical Unit.

For the A2 level course, pupils also investigate Comparative Studies, Physiology and Sports Psychology coupled with the Improvement of Effective Performance as a practical element.
