Youngster Out To Follow Mum Into The Test Cricket Arena
Ellesmere College student George Newton hopes to make his way in the world of cricket - by following in the footsteps of his mother. The talented teenager has just completed a successful week at the prestigious Bunbury Festival which took place at Oakham School in Leicestershire. The event showcases the best under-15 talent in the country with a lucky few progressing into the England Development Programme. Former England coach Andy Flower was among the observers at the Festival along with ex-England off-spinner Graeme Swann.
But George already has a former Test performer he can turn to for advice - his mum Laura. She played for England in 13 Tests, 73 one-day internationals and a brace of Twenty20 clashes between 1997 and 2007 and can boast a century in Test match cricket. Cricket certainly runs in the Newton family with George's father, Richard, the director of cricket for the Cheshire Cricket Board.
The Bunbury Festival proved a successful one for the Midlands as they came second in the 50-over competition before winning the T20 event.
Rod Jones, Cricket Academy Head Coach said, "A number of our players in the academy are working hard towards being good all round cricketers, but they are also good role models at the school. The future is looking bright for our academy, as players including George, Connor Davies and a number of others attend the English Cricket Boards National Performance Centre at Loughborough University".
