Winners of the Ellesmere College Year 8 Physics Competition Announced

This week the judging took place, and the winners announced, for the Ellesmere College Year 8 2008 Physics Competition.

At the beginning of January, and as part of their Physics lessons, all the 12 to 13 year old pupils were given the challenge to design a model or create an experiment that would explain a scientific concept, in a coherent way, to a non-scientific person. Examples included models and experiments on gravity, light diffusion, solids, liquid and gases as well as torsion and aerodynamics.

Bethany Lyttle won the first prize for her model explaining the three properties, solids, liquids and gases. Second prize was awarded to Ben Britton for his aerodynamics experiment.

Louise Paton, the Ellesmere College Gifted and Talented Coordinator commented: 'this was an exciting opportunity for the young pupils to demonstrate their impressive and extensive knowledge of scientific principles. The experiments were innovative and their explanations were extremely easy to understand. As a non-scientific person, I now have a better understanding of scientific principles such as aerodynamics and gravity.'

The competition was the idea of the Physics teacher, Mr Dale Crawford, who was particularly pleased at the level and variety of the entries. Louise Paton added: 'the competition was well received by the pupils and a big thank you must go to Mr Crawford for having organised the competition.'
