Will Edwards Shines Again in Bonheiden for Great Britain
With the Belgium sun shining down on him, 14 year-old British rider Will Edwards from Ellesmere College, who was competing under Great Britain's Team Fairfax banner, took the top spot in the 'Children on Horses Grand Prix' at the Young Rider Nations Cup Show at Bonheiden.
Will took victory after producing yet another stylish performance on his horse R Candy, a 10 year-old chestnut mare owned by Carl Edwards and Jane Lanni. The combination fought off the challenge from thirty-four other competitors tackling the 1.25m course.
Will and R Candy produced one of only seven first round clears and the combination produced a second faultless round to secure the win in a fantastic time of 36.73 seconds.
Will was one of just three riders to achieve a double clear, of which one was produced by Britain's 13 year-old Robert Murphy from Preston, Lancashire with Catherine Witt's 11 year-old bay gelding Del Fuego. This combination delivered their double clear in 38.43 seconds.
Will's Grand Prix result completed the Children on Horses Team's domination out in Bonheiden, at which they also took victory in their respective Nations Cup just the day before.
"I was really excited about this competition; my family has worked really hard preparing my horse, and she was jumping really well. The team needed a clear round from me to stay in gold position, and thankfully I managed to complete the course in a good time and without any faults" said Will.
His brother, Carmen, also competed at the Nations Cup in the Junior Grand Prix, tackling the 1.40m course. With two individual wins under his belt on his horse Bowhouse Secret, the 17 year-old helped the Great Britain team to fourth place, just missing out to Belgium, Sweden and the Netherlands, who eventually took first place.
"I was so pleased to be selected for Great Britain. This was my second time competing at the event and I knew what to expect. It was a really good course this year and the standard of the competitors was really high" said Carmen.
