Again this year, as is traditional at the School each Remembrance Day, at 11am the School came to a standstill with pupils, teachers, operations and administration staff observing a minute�s silence on the Terraces at the School�s flagpole. The Chaplain led the short prayers and the Last Post was played. Then on Remembrance Sunday, the School invited parents and former pupils to join pupils and staff for a Service of Remembrance in the School�s Chapel, whilst a contingent from the School�s Combined Cadet Force joined British Legion and other military representatives at the annual wreath laying event at the War Memorial in Ellesmere.   

The Chaplain, Reverend David Slim, conducted the Remembrance Sunday  Service, with the Captains of School reading the lessons and placing a wreath on behalf of the School at the School�s War Memorial in Ante Chapel.

A group of Old Ellesmerians poignantly read out the names of those who had been killed in action during the 2 World Wars. Following the Service, visitors, some who had travelled significant distances to attend the Service, joined the Headmaster and his wife for lunch in the Dining Hall.

Reverend David Slim commented, �Each year members of the extended  Ellesmere College Community are given the opportunity to remember the 111 pupils and 4 members of staff who were killed during the First World War, as well as the 53 pupils killed during World War II. It is always a moving ceremony and this year I was particularly delighted to see the return of some younger Old Ellesmerians from Germany and Ukraine, who had journeyed back to Shropshire for the weekend to pay their respects at their former School. A special thanks to Mark Powell who played the Last Post at both events�

Members of the public are welcome to join the Headmaster, pupils and members of staff at the School�s annual Community Carol Service on Thursday, 1st December at 7.30pm, followed by festive refreshments in Big School.
