Tennis Academy Teams Enjoy Successful Start to Season

Both boys and girls from the Schools Tennis Academy have made an excellent start to the summer season of competitions.

Both Under 19 Girls Teams are still involved in the Aberdare Cup. The A team squad of Jo Bowen in Year 11, Hannah Clarke in Year 10 and twins Harriet and Olivia Jones in Year 9, are just one win away from the national finals after victories against the Grange School and Rydal Penrhos, winning all twelve sets that were played in both fixtures.

They may yet find themselves playing the B team in what would be an historic regional final, after the squad of Emily Sutcliffe in Year 10, twins Christina and Patricia Lieberoth-Leden and Anabel Koldijk, all in Year 12, knocked out Shrewsbury Sixth Form College and Shrewsbury High School to set up a semi-final encounter with Lymm High School in the near future.

The Under 19A  Boys Team of James Joule in Year 13 , Christian Cieslik in Year 11, Toby Blake in Year 13, and Fredi Steinebach in Year 12, have also made excellent progress in their national competition, the Glanville Cup, and will travel to Idsall School next week knowing that they are just two wins away from a possible reunion with their female counterparts at the national finals, which takes place at Queenswood School in Hertfordshire during the first week of July.

For the Tennis Academy Director, Nikki Hoy, it has been a further indication of the growing strength in depth in the Academy, which has seen seven teams qualify for national finals over the last twelve months in the various age groups.  Nikki  commented, The atmosphere and camaraderie amongst the players at the moment is fantastic.  We have never made it to the final stages of the Aberdare or the Glanville before, but I really believe that this could be our year.
