Following the success enjoyed by the Girls Tennis team in the British National Schools Tennis Championships last year, the current 1st Girls Team have been selected to represent England and play in the forthcoming World Schools Tennis Championships in France later this month.
For the last 3 years, the 1st Girls Tennis Team have been 1 of just 8 schools that have reached the finals of the Aegon League Schools National Championship that are held each year in March in the Bolton Arena and which were actually won by the team this year.
With permission from the examining body to take their public examinations whilst participating in the competition, the 6 girls are Year 12 pupil Jo Bowen, Year 11 pupils Hannah Clarke and Emily Sutcliffe Year 10 pupils Olivia Jones and Harriet Jones and Year 9 pupil Catriona Jones.
The team will play against teams from around the world including China, France and Turkey. Nikki Hoy, Tennis Director commented, The 6 girls are a formidable team who, besides enjoying playing together, are all competitive. Their combined desire to win is formidable and shapes their every move on court. We wish them well as they compete against other international teams.
Whilst the Academy team is participating in this international tournament, the School is also embarking on a new initiative to encourage children aged between 4 and 10 years to join in the College Tennis Programme for a 4 week tennis course on Saturdays during term time.
