A Successful Start to the Summer Exams: International Baccalaureate & BTEC Results

Ellesmere College celebrates 2023 Results: International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma and BTEC Sports Coaching & Development

Ellesmere College students are celebrating the first results of the summer with the publication of the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma results and the BTEC Sports and Coaching Development Diploma.

Students that take the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma study six subjects and complete the Theory of Knowledge course and must achieve at least 24 points to achieve the Diploma, with certification for those who don't pass the 24-point threshold.

The top performing student this year achieved an impressive 44 points out of a maximum of 45 which equates to 4 A*s at A level and places them in the top 1% of IB students worldwide. The 2023 results saw 66% achieving 30 or more points, the gold standard for the IB Diploma.

The BTEC results continue to impress with students celebrating another year of 100% pass results that included several Distinctions (A* at A level).

The BTEC Diploma is a two A level equivalent course that students pursue alongside a third A level in a different subject area. Four students out of this year's cohort opted to complete the Extended Diploma – which is equal to 3 A Levels, and achieved Distinction star, Distinction, and merit, with one student attaining the highest mark possible - three Distinction Stars – equivalent to A*A*A* at A Level. The average outcome for the BTEC Extended Diploma by Ellesmere students is equivalent to AAB at A level.

The Headmaster at Ellesmere College, Mr Brendan Wignall, congratulated all Ellesmere Sixth Form students who completed the IB and BTEC this year and commented on their hard work. He said: "I am delighted for our pupils who have done so well in the International Baccalaureate Diploma and BTEC programmes. I commend them for how well they adjusted to the various disruption to their school life over the duration of the two-year course and for managing the rigorous demands of their chosen course of study so effectively. They have certainly worked very hard and achieved an excellent set of results and, consequently, are exceptionally well prepared for university or their chosen career path."

About the IB

The IB Diploma was introduced at Ellesmere College 16 years ago, as an alternative to A Levels and students who follow the International Baccalaureate course study six subjects and a course in The Theory of Knowledge. They also have to produce a university standard Extended Essay as part of their assessment over either a two year period, or if they are an elite athlete they can choose to study it over a three-year course as accredited by the World Academy of Sport.

The IB Diploma opens doors to the top universities in both the UK and around the world. It is a demanding and highly rewarding course of study held in high esteem by universities.

About the BTEC

The BTEC Sport and Coaching Development Diploma is aimed at students who have their sights set on a career in sports related areas such as physiotherapy, sports management, sports journalism and the health and leisure industry. It is seen as the ideal route into higher education and ultimately full-time employment within sport and health related fields. Universities have continually recognised the quality of students who complete the BTEC programme, and the skillsets acquired allow them to receive exceptional offers from a range of leading UK and international universities, including some high level sports scholarships.

The publication of A Level results will be on August 17th, and GCSE results on August 24th.
