Student Represents UK in International Competition

Year 10 student, James Bateman, has reached the final of the 2013 International Schools Essay Writing Competition and Debate. James was the only finalist from the UK to be selected to take part in the event, which will be hosted by The Living Rainforest in Berkshire.

The global essay writing competition and debate invites students from all over the world to share their views on the rights and responsibilities of different people, worldwide, in creating a sustainable future. The 15 year old submitted his winning essay, which looked at addressing the idea of sustainability with specific focus on who is responsible for the future of our planet. James will now take part in the International Debate for Northern Hemisphere Schools, which will take place on the 26th and 27th of June.

"To reach the final and represent the UK as part of the Northern Hemisphere team is amazing. I am really passionate about the world that we live in and this competition provided me with an opportunity to write about my views for a sustainable future. The final will be a great opportunity to debate our views and opinions with students from all over the world." Says James.

This year's competition received over 900 essays from students and a distinguished panel of judges, drawn from experts and educationalists in the field, selected the winning entries for each age category. The winning students will be awarded trophies at the International Schools Debate and their essays will be published on the competition website.

Mrs Waddams, Head of Geography at Ellesmere, said "I am delighted that James entered the competition, he has some strong views on many of the issues we cover in Geography and he definitely presented them well in this essay. I very much hope that he enjoys the debate section of the competition in June and I think that he should be very proud of his achievements."
