St Luke's' 'Think Pink Friday' Campaign Raises Funds for Charity

St Luke's' 'Think Pink Friday' continues to be a successful way of raising funds for charitable causes.

Every Friday, students, staff and the Housemaster of St Luke's' Boarding House are encouraged to wear an item of pink clothing within College regulations and to make a small donation for this privilege. St Luke's' first appeal, in Summer 2016, raised enough funds for Christian Aid to purchase over 100 mosquito nets in an effort to combat the spread of Malaria in Africa. The Christmas Appeal was equally successful, raising over £500 for Christian Aid's Famine Relief which was doubled by HMG to £1,000. For St Luke's' Summer Appeal 2018, it is the Barmouth RNLI which has been chosen as a recipient in recognition of St Luke's' Year 13 student Samuel Dangerfield, a senior cadet in the Navy section of the College's CCF Force and a long-standing volunteer lifeboat crew member at Barmouth RNLI. Samuel, one of the youngest RNLI volunteers nationally, was recently awarded a Commendation for Bravery by the Royal Humane Society for his praiseworthy actions as part of the lifeboat crew during an emergency situation on Barmouth beach. Samuel said: "Having completed life-guard training, especially for these type of emergencies, you do not think of your own safety, but rely on all the hours of training we have had for such eventualities; the thought is only for those who you have been called out to help."

Samuel's peers in St Luke's' are right behind him when it comes to helping raise funds for the Barmouth life boat crew. Year 12 student, Toby Bellis, said, "Living not too far away from the Welsh coast and being aware of the tremendous life-saving work the RNLI does on its beaches, I am keen to help support this very worthwhile appeal. Every Friday, it is a challenge to find a new pink item to wear, but it's a challenge we relish in St Luke's' and it makes for a colourful day!" His views were seconded by fellow Year 12 student, Arthur Goethals, "When at home in Belgium, I do a lot of work with the Scout Association, so fundraising and dedicating time to helping others comes naturally to me. I'm proud to be part of a worthy initiative at school too and feel good about playing a small part in helping the 'Think Pink Campaign." Housemaster of St Luke's', James Baggaley, said, "The 'Think Pink Friday' campaign was the brain child of Mr Clewlow who has successfully combined his sense of charitable duty with his passion for sartorial elegance. The boys and tutors in the House always give generously and we are arguably the best-dressed House in the school. What could be better!?"

It is hoped that the combined efforts by students and staff will help to exceed the Christmas Appeal funds, and additional contributions to the 'Think Pink Friday' are always gratefully accepted by St Luke's' Housemother, Rebecca Austin.
