Sixth Form Student Travels to Houses of Parliament to Meet Prime Minister
Following Joshua Boswells recent success, being the regional national winner of the Parliamentary Press Gallery writing competition, this week he travelled down to London to meet the Prime Minister, the Speaker of the House of Commons and his local MP. During the day Joshua learnt that he was the overall national winner and his award was presented by the Speaker of the House of Commons.
Joshuas winning entry recommended three policies that could be adopted by any of the parties for the forthcoming 2010 General Election and during the day he was given the opportunity to discuss his suggestions for Financial Sector reforms with Gordon Brown.
Joshua, from Glyn Ceiriog, travelled with his sister, Millie, and staying at the City Inn, a few minutes walk from the Houses of Parliament, the first part of the visit was to meet the Parliamentary Press Gallery Administrator, Elizabeth Johnson, in the Main Hall of the Houses of Parliament.
Proceeding into the Central Lobby, the day became even more interesting as familiar faces of key Government posts, including Cabinet Members began to pass by. A tour of both Houses followed with Joshua learning about the history of the building and the numerous paintings depicting historical scenarios. One of Joshuas highlights was to stand between in the dispatch box where prime ministers have stood for centuries delivering their speeches.
Next stop was to pass through security at the entrance to Downing Street, past the throngs of reporters and through the door of No. 10, which was briefly shown on Sky News last night. The group was ushered into the meeting room where the Prime Minister greets foreign heads of state.
Gordon Brown then met the group and, having read Joshuas essay asked him about his suggested policies to reform the Financial Sector. A tour of No 10 followed with a quick look at the Cabinet Meeting Room before the door was firmly closed as a further discussion commenced on the Chilcot Enquiry.
The next stop was across the road from the Houses of Parliament and into the BBC Parliamentary Studio, meeting the Producer, and being shown around the studios. Joshua commented, At this stage it was fun to see on the screen the MPs, who we had met earlier in the day, actually debating in the House.
Joshua then met with his local MP, the Right Honorable MP for Clwyd South, Martyn Jones in the Press Gallery, The final part of the day was to visit the Speakers House to meet Right Honorable MP, John Bercow, He made a speech to the group of regional winners and announced the overall winners, with Joshuas day in Parliament ending in receipt of the certificate for the overall Year 12 and 13 winner.
Joshua Boswell commented, The visit to the Houses of Parliament and No 10 was an amazing and unique experience as well as a great opportunity to make contacts in light of my personal career aim to go into Political Journalism and eventually Politics. Joshua intends to study Philosophy, Politics and Economics at University .
