At a ceremony held recently at Ellesmere College, Shropshire's retiring High Sheriff for 2017-18 - Charles Lillis - spoke warmly about his Legal Service and of the many happy times he and his wife Veronica had enjoyed across the the county.

Headmaster of Ellesmere College, Brendan Wignall, welcomed guests who included judges, magistrates, visiting sheriffs, members of the forces, clergy, and the Vice Lord-Lieutenant of Shropshire - Mark Cuthbert-Brown - to the service in the Ellesmere College chapel, and afterwards at a reception in Big School Hall. The Ellesmere College Choir sang in the chapel conducted by Director of Music, Tony Coupe, and supported by prefects and Head Boy and Head Girl - James Evans and Libby Hughes.

At the reception, Charles talked of a busy but productive year and said what an honour it had all been. Charles is succeeded by Rhoddy Swire, who was also amongst the guests at the service. The principal formal duties of high sheriffs today include attendance at Royal visits in the county and support for Her Majesty's high court judges when on circuit as well as more local support for the police and emergency services, voluntary sector and helping folk in need.
