A keen sixth form rugby player from Ellesmere's 1st XV team has been has been travelling north to Warrington Wolves Rugby Club for the past few weeks to be
assessed by the selectors for their Under 21 Academy.
Stephen Bannister, a Prefect and Captain of the 1st XV Academy Team has recently had it confirmed that he has been chosen to be signed for a contract prior to the new sevens' season in the New Year. He is currently at the development stage, about to start his training with fellow team mates.
Stephen Bannister joined Ellesmere College in Year 9 and throughout his time at the School has played for the 'A' rugby teams. He was picked to play for the 1st XV when he was 16 in Year 11 and currently acts as Captain of the 1st XV, during his last year at the School. For the last two seasons Stephen has also qualified to play for the U16 and U19 North Midlands Teams.Home is in Burton upon Trent, Derbyshire and before joining Ellesmere he was a pupil at Prestfelde.
Stephen Bannister commented, 'it has been tremendous from day one at Ellesmere to have the opportunity to pursue the development of my rugby skills under the guidance of the School's senior coaching staff. I am very proud to lead the 1st XV Academy side on a weekly basis when we play against other schools.' Stephen is currently working towards his A-levels with the aim to go on to study for a degree in Sports Studies at Leeds Trinity and All Saints University.
Paul Goodwin, Director of the Ellesmere College Rugby Academy, added 'with the signing of Stephen by Warrington Wolves Rugby Club, we are all delighted that he is receiving the recognition he deserves. Stephen has always taken his rugby seriously and through his recent 1st Team Captaincy has demonstrated not only his excellent playing skills but also his leadership skills. We all wish him well with both his studies and future rugby opportunities.'
