Professional Rugby for 3 Players from Ellesmere College

As the Director of Rugby at Ellesmere continues to scout for rugby talented pupils to join the Academy Squad in future years, the School is this week celebrating signing for three of this year's 1st XV to professional clubs.

Whilst Sam Lewis, from Baschurch, started at the school in Year 10, following his experience in a summer rugby course at the School, both Joel Galley, from Rhyl and James King from Mold joined Ellesmere's Sixth Form. Recently all three boys have combined their A-level studies whilst playing for the School's 1st XV team and developing their rugby talent under the auspices of the School's Rugby Academy.

Last November, James and Joel were selected to play for the Midlands U18 team. James and Joel were then invited to play for the Welsh Crawshaw's XV and as a result were selected for the Welsh U18 squad. Training involved four months travelling to South Wales to train every Wednesday and Sunday at Bridgend, Cardiff. Through their commitment to training and their considerable talent James and Joel were then selected in the line up for the Welsh Under 18 XV.

Sam Lewis, after playing for England U16B in Year11, was too old in his final year due to the 1st January ruling for U18 international age groups. He continued to travel and train with Worcester Warriors whilst also being selected for the North Midlands U20 team.

Negotiations then ensued for all three boys to sign-up for professional club contracts. James to Osprey, Joel to Llanlelli Scarlets and Sam to Worcester. Once their forthcoming examinations come to an end they will be joining their fellow team mates to start training together in preparation for next season.

Paul Goodwin, Ellesmere College Rugby Academy Director, added, 'It is remarkable to have two boys achieving international honours, but to have three players from the same team signing professional contracts is unprecedented. We hope that all three can go on to fulfill their potential at senior level and wish them every success.'
