Robbie Burns Night was celebrated this year in earnest by the Parents Society who arranged a Scottish themed evening for parents and staff. As well as a traditional Scottish piper entertaining guests and an interesting whiskey presentation by one of the shooting coaches, Jim Quinlan, there was ceilidh dancing with music provided by a group of local church musicians from Wem. The event also raised funds for the Care Trust Romania.
The music was provided by a band organised by Robin Townsend, Lower School teacher, and an elder of Wem Baptist Church. Playing alongside members of the Churchs congregation was pupil, Luke Taylor. Together they played a series of ceilidh dance pieces with a further member of the congregation acting as a caller who put guests through their paces with the dancing. Robin Townsend explained, In the true spirit of folk music, we play for fun and raising funds at the same time is an added bonus. Wem Baptist Church has for many years supported the work of Care Trust Romania, with regular van loads of clothes and essential supplies being sent across to remote parts of the Country.
Helen Ainge, Parents Society Chair added, The band waived their fee so that proceeds from the evening could be donated to their Churchs nominated charity, Care Trust Romania. We were delighted to be able to present Mr. Townsend with a cheque for 350.
