Plus Points All Round As Schools Team Up For Maths Challenge

The regional heats of the UK's biggest team mathematics competition for Year 8 and 9 students took place with 12 teams from North Wales and Shropshire competing for a place in the national finals. The UKMT Team Challenge hosted by Rydal School in Colwyn Bay, North Wales promotes mathematical dexterity, team working, and communication skills.

Verity Buglass, Harry Newton, Charlie Digby and Captain Elinor Haworth of Ellesmere College competed tirelessly over the three rounds and on a number of difficult mathematics challenges to finish second to the overall winners Moreton Hall.

Eleanor said "It was great to visit another school to compete and test our knowledge of maths. We all really enjoyed the challenges and we are so pleased to finish in the top two and may eventually have the opportunity to go into the final."

The competition ended on an energetic high, with students running round the school hall to answer maths questions displayed on the walls.

Susan Bogue, Teacher of Maths, said "We are very proud of the team, not least because they have been incredibly self-motivated and given up a significant amount of their time preparing for the regional rounds. The top team automatically goes through to the national final in London and there is a possibility that as finishing a good second we could be there too".
