Lower School
Following the 2010 Annual General Meeting of the Parents Society, a new Chairperson has been elected to the parents committee that supports social functions at the School.
After a busy and successful year, former Chairperson, Sue Dewhirst, mother to Matthew, in Year 10, has relinquished the reigns of the Parents Society Committee to the Vice-Chairperson, Sena Parry. The last 12 months have seen a variety of well-supported social events for parents and families, including a Quiz Night, a hugely successful Ladies Lunch, Macmillan Coffee Morning and Abba themed Winter Ball. Whilst enjoying each others company, the events have collectively produced a surplus that has been re-invested in the School as well as supporting Macmillan Cancer Relief. Besides supporting the development of the Schools Wildlife Garden, Lower School have benefitted from an activity centre funded by the Parents Society. Sue commented, It has been a busy but fun year supporting the Schools parent body as Chairperson of the Ellesmere College Parents Society. To be able to donate the funds for the Lower School playground activity equipment from the proceeds of the Committees successful events, has been the icing on the cake and I wish Sena Parry, as incoming Chairperson, a rewarding year ahead too.
Sena Parry, is mother to Kate in Year 10 who started Ellesmere in Year 7 in 2006. Sena became a parent a year earlier than had been expected after a visit by her daughter to the School and the decision being taken to move her from Old Hall School in Wellington a year early. Sena explained, We chose Ellesmere as it offered what we considered to be a very well balanced mix of high quality academic education with a caring and nurturing pastoral system which allowed the children to develop in their own areas and at their own pace. Kate thoroughly enjoys her school life and participates in a wide range of the activities offered.
Sena became involved with the Parents Society in 2007, initially helping out at events and slowly became more involved with the Committee with the intention to get to know the other parents and families. She explained, Last year I was asked by Sue Dewhirst to be Vice Chairman and was happy to take this role. I decided to accept the post of Chairman this year as I wanted to try to develop the social side of the Society more and to encourage more parents and families to become involved.
With the help of all the Committee members, the Parents Society are working on many events and have recently organised a ballroom dancing master class which attracted both parents and pupils to attend. Following the successful Christmas Disco for the Key Stage 2 pupils, it is the chance of the Years 7 and 8 to enjoy a disco tomorrow evening that has also been organized by the Parents Society.
The Committee is currently working on the two main very exciting events of the year, the 2010 Ladies Lunch on 1st July and the Christmas Ball. There is also a busy schedule of other events targeted at both parents and pupils. Sena added, We are always looking for new ideas and encourage parents and grandparents who would like to become involved to come along to the meetings held twice a term and to the events themselves.
