Oboes and Easter Eggs: The Easter Orchestral Society Returns to Ellesmere

Ellesmere College once again welcomed the Easter Orchestral Society who return for their seventh year this Easter.

Led by Musical Director, Michael Thorne, the Easter Orchestral Society (formerly known as York Orchestral Course Society) dates back to 1977, when it was set up to continue an orchestral course which had been running for a quarter of a century at Attingham Park, Shropshire. Since then courses have been held annually each Easter, sometimes at York St John University, but in more recent years, here at Ellesmere College.

The aim of the Easter Orchestral Society is to not only provide a setting where amateur musicians are offered the opportunity to tackle repertoire that most would not normally get to play, but just as importantly, to have fun socialising with other like-minded musicians. This year their repertoire includes pieces such as:

• Don Juan - Richard Strauss
• Isle of the Dead - Sergey Rachmaninov
• Scythian suite - Sergei Prokofiev
• Symphony No. 2 (Elegiaca) - Andrzej Panufnik

The evening performance, always a wonderful celebration of music in the grand setting of Big Hall at the College, will include:

• Piano Concerto No.5 - Camille Saint-Saëns
• Easter Festival Overture - Nicolay Rimsky-Korsakov
• Coppelia Suite I - Léo Delibes
