Navy Cadets Attend Royal Review and Buckingham Palace Garden Party
Three Combined Cadet Force Navy cadets from Ellesmere College were recently invited to take part in the Cadet 150 Royal Review which culminated in a garden party at Buckingham Palace.
The Year 9 Navy cadets Molly Venner, Annabel Rogan and Ronald Clewlow accompanied by Acting Sub Lieutenant Michael Coats, Head of IT and an officer in the Navy Section of the Schools Combined Cadet Force, were invited to participate in this historic event that celebrated 150 years of the cadets forces. They were also given the opportunity to bring along one guest to the garden party at Buckingham Palace.
The cadets were required to attend a course run at HMS Excellence in Portsmouth before the Royal Review. The group stayed there for 3 days, sleeping on board HMS Bristol, a type 42 destroyer. Michael Coats commented, during their stay in Portsmouth, they practiced drills and marching from 8.00am until 5.00pm each day. The smiles on their faces when they saw the size of the ship were amazing, as they all thought that it would be a much smaller vessel.
In Portsmouth, they joined a wider contingent of CCF Navy cadets and Sea Cadets from around the country and made friends with other cadets during the event.
On the day of the parade the cadets were transported to Horse Guards Parade where they were joined by other cadet forces including the Air Training Corps and the Army Cadet Force. Led by the CCF Navy band, all the cadets paraded along the Mall.
Molly Venner explained, There were many cheering and clapping supporters along the route. As we approached the dais Prince Charles was there to take the salute. He was dressed in his naval uniform and returned the salute in the traditional manner. We then marched past Prince Charles into Wellington Barracks where we were split up into three groups. Our group entered the grounds of Buckingham Palace by the right hand gate. Once inside the Palace we were given the job of route markers. We formed up to make a pathway for the Royal family to proceed down. When the Royals came to us Prince Charles spoke directly to me which was particularly exciting. The Duchess of Cornwall was also present. Once the Royal Party had reached their destination we were free to walk around the grounds of the Palace and meet up with our guests.
At the end of the day the cadets marched out of Buckingham Palace back into Wellington Barracks where coaches were waiting to transport them back to HMS Bristol. Michael Coats added, this event takes place every 50 years and will be remembered by all for a long time. The cadets were outstanding and a credit to Ellesmere College and the CCF Navy section.
