A year 8 pupil has recently been presented with a Highly Commended Certificate for the butterfly carrier he designed as his entry for a national packaging design competition. The Starpack Awards, organised by the Institute of Materials and Mining are sponsored by the British Polythene Industry.
As part of the Schools Gifted and Talented Programme, 8 Lower School pupils took part in the competition. Terry Howitt-Dring, Design and Technology Teacher explained, It was the first year that we entered some of our pupils work into this competition that encourages excellence in packaging and design amongst students and we were obviously delighted by Ryens success.
The entries were judged on specific criteria defined in the brief with marks also awarded for creativity, environmental considerations and quality of mock-up models and graphics. Ryen Spencer Wolfe, aged 13, produced detailed plans and an impressive butterfly carrier which earned him a Highly Commended certificate for his design which was presented to him at this weeks Lower School Assembly by the Head of Lower School, Sharon Owen. Sharon Owen commented, Ryens designs for his butterfly carrier were certainly very impressive and, to my amusement, rumour has it that the carrier has already been used to transport his pet spider to school for his recent English Speaking Board examination talk!
