Great IB Results and Cambridge Success For Students

Ellesmere students were celebrating the first results of the summer with the publication of the International Baccalaureate Diploma results. The average overall score for the International Baccalaureate candidates equated to three A grades at A Level, with local Ellesmere girl, Becky Orr, achieving a top score of 45 points, which is an equivalent of 5 A* grades at A Level. Becky has secured her place to read History at Girton College, Cambridge.

Becky achieved the highest level available, level 7 across 6 subjects (English, French, History, Mathematics, Biology and Geography) and a grade A for her extended essay. Becky is delighted and on getting her results she said 'I am very happy with my results and have thoroughly enjoyed the IB experience at Ellesmere. Particular thanks to Dr Tompkins, the IB coordinator, for all his encouragement and support over the two years'.

Over 55% of Ellesmere students achieved the higher level Diploma by gaining more than 30 points, which is equivalent of 3 A* grades at A Level and 100% of students achieved the pass level of 24 points, the equivalent of BCC grades at A Level. Alongside Becky with her numerous level 7's there were a number of students who achieved the top score in specific subjects; Luke Taylor from Ellesmere in Economics & Maths, Edward Lean from Bristol in French, Catherine Mackworth from Shrewsbury, James Morrison from Wrexham and Hannah Clarke from Wem, in Maths. James has secured his place to read History at King's College, London and Hannah will be reading Geography at Sheffield.

The International Baccalaureate Diploma was introduced at Ellesmere College in September 2006, as a challenging alternative to A Levels. Students who follow the International Baccalaureate course study six subjects, a course in The Theory of Knowledge, and produce a university standard Extended Essay as part of their assessment. While demanding, the course is highly rewarding and held in high esteem by universities. The IB Diploma opens doors to the top universities in both the UK and around the world.

The Headmaster at Ellesmere College, Mr Brendan Wignall, commented on the hard work of all the students "I am delighted for our pupils who have done so well in the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme. They have certainly worked very hard. A specific word of congratulations must go to Becky Orr. She has been a most diligent student and will relish the academic challenge that studying at Cambridge will provide her. All of our IB students will be exceptionally well prepared for university following the rigorous demands of this course. We look forward now to the publication of the A Level and GCSE results in August."
