Ellesmere College Tennis Centre was the perfect venue for the recent School Games 'Mini Red' Tournament, with five local primary schools taking part in the North Shropshire Regional Semi-finals - Oswestry School, St Andrews, Prees School, Hinstock School & Market Drayton Junior School - in conjunction with School Games through regional coordinator - Mollie Croxon.
The competition has heats in four regions across North Shropshire (North West Shropshire, Wem, Baschurch & Market Drayton/Whitchurch) after which the winners from each heat then attend the Summer Shropshire Homes School Sport Festival, as part of School Games taking place on 2nd July in Shrewsbury. They will compete against 5 other areas from Shropshire, Telford and Wrekin (Shrewsbury, South Shropshire, East Shropshire, Telford and Wrekin Langley & Burton Borough).
Stephen Welti, Director of Tennis at Ellesmere College said, "The Indoor Tennis Centre at Ellesmere College was the perfect venue for the children, all from years 3 and 4, to play tennis in a friendly but professional environment. For many it was their first experience of competitive tennis and we are very much in alignment at the College with the School Games pillars: Teamwork, Self Belief, Respect, Passion, Honesty & Determination."
In the first heat, St Andrews had a hard fought game to beat Market Drayton Junior School with 182 to 176 points. Oswestry School played against Prees School and won with 175 to 96 points. Group two comprised Hinstock School, who won with 150 points, Prees A (83 points) and Oswestry School (77 points).
