Exciting Sports Development at Ellesmere College

According to records, the Ellesmere College swimming pool was constructed in 1901 and 106 years later the pool enclosure project is now well underway in preparation for completion by the start of the next academic year in September. This new facility will connect the Sports Hall, which opened in 2004 and the former gym, recently converted into a modern weights and fitness suite.

Ian Williams, Director of Sport at Ellesmere College commented, 'The PE team are looking forward to giving all our pupils the opportunity to swim throughout the year and in particularly helping to develop the considerable swimming talent that already exists amongst our pupil body.'

Brendan Wignall, Headmaster added, 'I am delighted that the legacy of a former member of staff has made it possible for the pool enclosure project to be realised. This is a great opportunity for Ellesmere College to expand its aquatic programme. From September all pupils under eleven will be swimming at least once a week. We will be introducing classes throughout the School and these will include waterpolo, lifesaving and sub-aqua training.'

Besides the pool, this summer sees the arrival of new equipment into the Fitness Suite. The enclosed pool will link the Sports Hall and Fitness Suite to create the new Ellesmere College Sports Centre.
