Ellesmere Youngsters Impress As They Join Pathway To The Top

Ellesmere College pupils George Newton, Harry Newton, Connor Davies and Sam Johnson have earned national recognition following a series of impressive performances on the county cricket scene.

The quartet have caught the eye of England Cricket Board selectors this summer, to win an invitation to attend the ECB National Cricket Performance Centre at Loughborough University.

Sam (16), George (15), Connor (14) and Harry (13) join the emerging talent programme, which aims to help the most promising young players develop their skills with the aim of playing cricket at the very highest level. Players within the programme train as part of their County Emerging Player Programme, where they receive coaching support above and beyond that of a regular County Age Group player.

Ellesmere Head Coach Rod Jones Said "The time spent at the National Cricket Performance Centre in Loughborough allows our national lead coaches to develop bespoke programmes for each member of the squad and work intensively with the players and to continue to assess their readiness to graduate to the full England side when the opportunity arises".

Cricket at Ellesmere has been seeing a resurgence of talent emerging from their Academy into county game. Johnson made his debut for the Derbyshire Academy against Leicestershire during the summer as a wicket keeper, taking his maiden catch and stumping. Dewi Jones, a former pupil at the school, progressed through Ellesmere's Player Pathway Programme to represent Glamorgan this year and has now been offered a full-time contract.

Gareth Owen, Academy Director said "All the boys have put a lot of effort into their improvement, particularly throughout the 'out of season' Winter Programme that we have at the school. Their attendance at Loughborough is testimony to their hard work, dedication and excellent attitude that they all possess. It's great to have this recognised by the English Cricket Board".
