Ellesmere College is celebrating success on the rugby field after returning victorious from the Manchester Sevens National Rugby Tournament. The Under 16 team beat off stiff competition from throughout the country to win the final against Warwick School 24 - 12.
The Manchester Sevens Schools Festival, held at Broughton Park FC in Manchester, is a national rugby tournament, which is open to all schools. Over the two day rugby festival girls and boys competed in a variety of age group tournaments, ranging from U12s up to U18s
Ellesmere College had convincing wins against Holyrood School, Wisbech Grammar School and Wirral Grammar School to secure a place in the national final.
Director of Rugby at Ellesmere, Alex Murphy, said "the team found their form and played some excellent sevens style rugby, they managed to calmly keep hold of the ball for long periods and score some tremendous tries. This is a great achievement for such a team and I am sure they can only get better".
The Under 13's also took part in the tournament and faced a difficult group which included Altrincham Grammar School, Queen Ethelburg School, Barnardiston Hall and Wisbech Grammar. The team built on some successful performances and progressed through to the national final where they were beaten by Altrincham Grammar School 15 - 0.
