Ellesmere Swimmers Turn To Open Water

Ellesmere College Titans Harriet Rothwell, Olivia Gardner, Luke Parker, Murrin Dalrymple and Ellinor Southward all made the trip to Boswroth Water Park in Leicestershire to compete at the Midland District Open Water Championships.

Murrin Dalrymple's first ever competition in open water produced a gold medal in the 13yrs 5km event. A swim which Murrin took on from the gun, leading from start to finish with a clear win and an impressive introduction to open water swimming.

The second District gold went to Harriet Rothwell who competed with Olivia Gardner in the 14yrs 1.5km race. Harriet took the gold medal with a well-timed and paced race from start to finish. "She looked like a natural open water swimmer, swimmers around her didn't faze her and she showed some class out there today" said Alan Bircher (Coach). Olivia Gardner finished a respectable 5th place and also looks in a good position going into the national championships later this month.

Two silver medals also followed with Luke Parker (2012 national bronze medallist) taking the 13yrs silver medal in a tight finish for the gold medal. Ellinor Southward also finished second in the 12yrs age group in her first ever open water race.

"All of the swimmers did a good job today, we have around three weeks until the national open water competition and we needed to get a race in open water conditions to make sure we are prepared to race at the nationals" said Head Coach Alan Bircher.
