Ellesmere Installs New Chaplain

Last week the Bishop of Shrewsbury visited Ellesmere College for the Installation and Licensing Service of Reverend David Slim as the new Ellesmere College Chaplain.

Held in the Ellesmere College Chapel and witnessed by a congregation of pupils and staff, the licensing was conducted by Bishop Alan, the Bishop of Shrewsbury, and the installation as the new Chaplain, by the Senior Woodard Provost, Canon Brendan Clover. Representing the College School Council was Mrs Claire Griffith and Reverend John Vernon, Rural Dean of Ellesmere acted as Bishop's Chaplain and represented the local clergy. Canon Geoffrey Marsh, Rector of Wrexham and Reverend Gary Owen also attended to support David, a former team colleague.

David was born and educated in Birmingham and initially trained as a teacher, before having the calling to the ministry at the age of 38. The next two years were spent studying at the Lincoln Theological College. He served his title in the Diocese of Birmingham and was the Curate of St. John's Church in Sutton Coldfield. David's first incumbency was as Rector of the parishes of Marchwiel and Is-y-coed in the Church of Wales diocese of St. Asaph where he served for 10 years. During that time he was a Governor of two schools and an elected local Community Councillor. Then, in 2003, he joined the Wrexham Anglican team as the Vicar of St. James and St. Margaret's.

The new Chaplain will be known as Father David. He is married to Joy and they have four daughters and two grandchildren. Joy has been the senior nursing sister for the last five years and the couple have recently moved into a house on campus. Father David commented, 'It has long been my ambition to combine my two vocations and I am delighted that Ellesmere College has enabled me to do this. I look forward to serving as God's representative in this busy and exciting post.'
