Ten Sixth Form students recently travelled to Holland to participate in the internationally represented Model United Nations.
A total of 400 students from around the world came together for a realistic simulation of the United Nations. The team had been chosen to represent Japan and the United Nations High Commission for Refugees.
The Schools participation in the Model United Nations was instigated by Cathy Allen, Head of English as an Additional Language, and this was the third time Sixth Form students have had the opportunity to join in the Model United Nations debating forum. Cathy Allen, who accompanied the group to Leiden commented, The students took part in the debates leading to the formation of resolutions in the Security Council and General Assemblies on many issues of importance to the world at present - ranging from the situation in North Korea to the exploitation of children.
The simulation which lasted 3 days was attended by a truly international group of Sixth Formers with English students Dominick Coppinger and Charlotte Petrie participating alongside students from Kazakhstan, Russia, Germany, and Japan. Reka Kanniess commented, Although you more often know the names of countries other delegates represent rather than their actual names, you still end up having gained new friends from all over the world by the end of the event. To sum up, the Munish 10 team had a fantastic experience.
The International Baccalaureate Coordinator at the School, Dr. Ian Tompkins added, The Model United Nations event embraces the ethos of the IB Diploma that is offered at Ellesmere since it focuses on fostering understanding and cooperation amongst students from around the world.
