Ellesmere College Sixth Form Students Direct One-Act Plays

On two recent consecutive evenings all the seats in the Ellesmere College Arts Centre have been taken to watch senior pupils perform in the annual House Play Festival. Fellow pupils, staff and parents were entertained by four plays, each lasting approximately one hour.

Since the beginning of the term a group of four sixth form pupils have had the opportunity to direct one-act comedies with over 50 Senior School pupils participating. During the evenings of the actual performances the actor and director, Kevin Tomlinson, was in the audience and he closed each evening with a commentary.

Richard Boswell, Director of the Arena Arts Programme at Ellesmere, commented "our annual Festival this year included a stage production of the wonderful "Touch of Class", an episode from "Fawlty Towers", Woody Allen's Greek comedy "God", a riotous farce called "The Queen Must Die" and an hilarious spoof of the Tarzan legend, "Zartan". The plays were all directed and produced by pupils."

As is the tradition on the second night, the Festival ended with the Ellesmere Oscars' style awards ceremony that is known as the "Ellies" when a number of awards were presented to groups of actors for their performances, and also to technical support pupils for their efforts backstage.
