Ellesmere College Sixth Form Student Gains Royal Yachting Association Qualification

The destinations for Ellesmere College pupils during a recent Field Day were numerous and varied. They ranged from paddling Canadian canoes on the River Dee in Llangollen for the Duke of Edinburgh Gold participants to having a back- stage theatre tour in Birmingham followed by a concert in the Symphony Hall.

However, for one Lower Sixth student it was a particularly satisfying day. A keen yachtsman for many years, Nicholas Steggel, a student in the Lower Sixth and member of the Navy Section of the Ellesmere College Combined Cadet Force, had the opportunity to take and pass his Level 2 Royal Yachting Association qualification.

As explained by Debbie Joynson-Brooke, the Director of Activities at Ellesmere College, 'the attainment of this sailing qualification confirms Nick's dexterity and commitment to sailing. He had to demonstrate a range of sailing techniques including tacking, gybing and negotiating a triangular course, as well as rigging and rescue procedures.'
