Ellesmere College Rugby Playing Pupils Raise Their Game

Following the recent Midlands, North Midlands and Shropshire rugby selection trials, Ellesmere College is enjoying strong representation.

Mark Padgett has recently been selected to play for the U18 Midlands team whilst his fellow Ellesmere College 1st team mate, Lloyd Hayes, has qualified to play for Shropshire and the North Midlands U18 teams. Also playing for the Shropshire U18 side from the School's 1st rugby team are Lawrence Walters, Caleb Thomas and Martin Jones, Andrew Coulborough.

Pupils have also been successful at U16 level with Ben Brooks, William Goodwin and Bryn Phillips all representing Shropshire as well as being part of the North Midlands U16 squad. Five further Year 11 pupils have also been chosen to play for Shropshire's U16. They are Oliver Brereton, Michael Brown, Jake Taylor, James Whittles and Hugh Wignall.

Another group of boys have also been chosen to play for the Shropshire U15, U14 and U13 squads. At U15 level they are Angus Cross, George Hymes, Matthew Mackintosh and Jack Smith. Matthew Dewhirst, Luke Taylor and Samuel Owen all have gained places in the U14 squad and finally 6 boys at U13 are also representing their county. They are Noah Appleby, Henry Collard-Underwood, Oliver Lock, Alistair Miller, Joseph Rogers and Henry Whitehouse.

Paul Goodwin commented, 'It is hugely pleasing to see so many pupils involved at all levels. It is important that players expose themselves to the coaching expertise available through the County, their club and the School. For Ellesmere College to have 27 players involved in county rugby and beyond is excellent.'

An Ellesmere College Rugby Academy Day will be held on Saturday24th January to which boys aged 13+ and their families are invited to attend and to learn more about the opportunities available at the School to combine educational excellence with excellent rugby development coaching.
