Ellesmere College Lower School Pupils Perform "Twelfth Night"

The William Shakespeare classic play 'Twelfth Night', has this week been performed at the Arts Centre by a group of budding Year 7 and 8 actors.

Under the direction of Margaret Hutchings, Media Studies and English teacher, the cast of 27 have spent much time this term learning lines and working together as a team to bring the play, set in the 1970's to life.

The play was performed on 2 consecutive nights to enthusiastic audiences. As well as a number of songs from the 70's being played, including favourites by Marc Bolam, Abba and Queen, live music was performed by the Year 8 Band, under the direction of Bethan Jones, Lower School Music Teacher. The set construction was delivered by Fred Williams, from the Design & Technology department and the cast was also supported by 2 sixth form students, Tristan Thomas and Lauren Griffiths, who were responsible for lighting and sound under the direction of Ellesmere's Theatre Manager, Rachel Orrell.

Margaret Hutchings commented: 'It was a challenge for the pupils to learn Shakespeare's lines and perform them with real meaning, but they succeeded beyond my expectations. Setting the play in the 1970's meant we could have a lot of fun bringing the ideas and humour to life in a way which even quite young students could enjoy and I was very impressed by their dedication and teamwork. As Malvolio says, 'Some achieve greatness....' and they certainly did!
