As part of Wednesday afternoon activities for Ellesmere College Lower School Year 7 pupils, a group of pupils spent much of last term creating winter flowering hanging baskets with the proceeds going to charity.
During a six week period, a group of 20 pupils created 63 hanging baskets, learning to plant bulbs and fill baskets with winter colour. The baskets were then sold to staff and parents.
A total of £336 was raised by the sale of the hanging baskets and earlier this week, the pupils presented Sally Rimmer from Macmillan Cancer Support with a cheque for £112. Cheques of similar amounts having been sent to the Rehabilitation Unit at the Robert Jones and Agnes Hunt Orthopaedic Hospital and the British Heart Foundation. It is now planned to repeat the project next term with summer flowering baskets.
Rae Nicolson, the teacher in charge of the gardening activity commented, 'The pupils enjoyed learning new skills and were delighted by the enthusiasm for the sale of the baskets.'
