Ellesmere College CCF Easter Camp 2008

Ellesmere College Combined Cadet Force mounted an arduous week-long exercise in the Highlands of Scotland during the Easter holidays. Based at the Joint Services Mountain Training Centre at Tulloch Station, near Fort William, the week included learning snow and ice climbing skills on the slopes of Ben Nevis and Creag Meagaidgh, two of the most famous Scottish mountains, as well as the ascent of a number of peaks over 3000 feet (Munros). In the excellent snow conditions the full range of skills were deployed and the cadets had tremendous fun constructing a variety of snow shelters to gain respite from the biting winds and spindrift.

The second half of the week included a Duke of Edinburgh expedition into the remote area of Knoydart with its rugged and spectacular scenery around the shores of Loch Nevis. Lieutenant Colonel Graham Hutchinson commented, 'The boys and girls on the exercise had the fortune to have good weather and snow conditions for most of the week. This enabled them to fulfil all the objectives of the Camp, which were to practise the cadets in teamwork and how to safely undertake adventurous activities by controlling the risks associated with them. An especially pleasing aspect of the trip was the presence of three Old Ellesmerians amongst the instructors and support staff, who have all previously benefited from the School's contingent's 40-year history of Adventurous Training in Scotland.'
