Ellesmere College 2009 A level and IB Examination Results

The A level celebrations at Ellesmere College combine with the success of the International Baccalaureate for a bumper year of excellent grades.

Students and teachers are delighted that students have achieved top grades and are able to move on to university.   Overall performance was excellent with 95.8% of students achieving pass grades including some top class individual results. Girls achieved a 98.6% pass rate with 49.3% being top A/B grades.  Most departments recorded 100% pass.

Whilst heartfelt congratulations go to all students there were some particularly notable performances that are worthy of specific mention such as David Anders-Richards, Head Boy, who achieved 4 grade A's and is to read Medicine at UCLA in America, Colin Fergusson, also 4 A grades and is to read Geography at Durham, Todd Evans, three A grades in Physics, Maths and Geography and James Norman, 3 A grades in Geography, Physics and Mathmatics.  The girls certainly were not to be outdone with an excellent gathering of top grades, notably Stephanie Edwards with 5 in total; 4 A grades and a B grade and Ashley Whittle with 4 grade A's.

Ellesmere's IB students received their results earlier in the summer and the average ucas score was 377 points, which equates to over 3 A grades at A level.  The IB students face a challenging course, studying six subjects plus a course in the Theory of Knowledge and have to complete an independent research piece to achieve the Diploma. Yasmin Rahbari gained 38 IB points (which is valued as 605 ucas points, or 5 A grades) with a top level 7 in Economics.  She will start her degree course in Loughborough next month.  Hendrik Scheer also achieved 38 points and a level 7 in Geography.  He will be embarking on Higher Education at London School of Econmics.

Mr Brendan Wignall, Headmaster, said 'We pride ourselves on combining academic success with development of the individual. We are delighted with today's A level results and the IB results last month and take pride in the students who have worked so hard whilst involving themselves so much in all that we do.

Our recent inspection report stated that by the time they leave, pupils are mature, fulfilled individuals who are comfortable with themselves and relate well to others; they are well-prepared for adult life.  That is evident when we look at these young Ellesmerians who are collecting their results today.

All students completing their studies with us this year deserve this success.  Credit must also go to the excellent work of our teaching staff and of course to parents for their support and encouragement.'
