Cricketers make the grade at County Level

This year has seen an increased number of boys and girls from the School being selected for their County Cricket squads. A total of 18 boys and girls have been selected for Cheshire, Shropshire and Wales. Alfie Thelwell and Ben Beaver have been selected for the North Shropshire U10s and U11s district squad respectively, while Luke Parker and Dominic Freer-Carmichael have been selected for the District U13s squad. The boys travel back to the School to be involved in the district squad lead by ECB Level III Shropshire Coach and Director of Cricket at the School, Rod Jones. Following the winter programme the players will move onto represent North Shropshire against the other 3 districts. Ben has also been selected for the Wales U11s squad and recently spent 2 days of his half term in Cardiff working with the team.

Sam Ellis and Matthew Batkin who joined the School in September have again been selected for the winter squad for Shropshire this year at U12s age group. Both boys play their cricket at Whitchurch Cricket Club and are looking forward to the season ahead at the School. In the same U12s age group Ben Gibbon has been selected for the Cheshire Squad, Ben also joined the School in September and will be a major part of the Lower School cricket and the Cheshire squad.

Lower School Head Boy George Newton has been selected for the U13s squad this summer, George had an extremely successful season last year with School and Cheshire. George represented the U12s Cheshire team last year scoring 114 runs and taking 16 wickets.

Year 10 pupils William Doerr and David Powell have been selected for the Shropshire U15s squad, both boys travel alternate weeks to Wrekin College to take part in the intense winter programme which includes fitness testing, strength and conditioning training, fielding and net sessions. The boys are hoping to push for a spot in the summer squad of 16 to take part in the National U15s competition.

Sixth Formers Dewi Jones and Scott Burdekin have been selected for Wales and Cheshire U17s respectively. Dewi is also part of the Glamorgan Emerging Players Programme taking part in training sessions with Glamorgan fast bowlers Will Owen and Simon Jones. Scott has represented Cheshire for a number of years and last year captained the U16s team. Both are hoping to have successful seasons for the School and their Counties.

Girls Cricket continues to develop strongly in the School, with Lower School girls having success at the recent county trials. Abi Parker and Rosie Holland have been selected for the U11s Shropshire squad while Caro and Lottie Hulme, Aster Jones and Mia Foster have been selected for the U13s winter squad.

Director of Cricket, Rod Jones commented, We are delighted for all of the players who have achieved representative honours, the numbers are growing each year. We wish all of the players well over the winter training and the season ahead with club, County and School.
