Classic car rally revs up support for children’s charity at Ellesmere College

A charity providing care for sick and terminally ill children has raised more than £1,600 from the recent 'Classic's At The College' car rally.

Ellesmere College hosted its first ever classic car show in aid of Hope House at the weekend and it's already set to return next year as the event was a huge success.

Seventy four classic and vintage vehicles registered before the day, with many more guests attending the rally on Saturday (June 2). It proved so popular that the entry list had to be closed early.

The winning car belonged to Anthony Madden, of Ellesmere - a Ford Anglia 105E saloon registered in 1968.

Stephen Mullock, Assistant Head at Ellesmere College, said: "We were overwhelmed at the number of registrations and were pleased to see so many people enjoying the event, which we had fantastic weather for.

"The cars began the rally in Market Drayton and made their way to us at the College, where we also had our National Art Exhibition taking place so something on offer to keep everyone entertained. We are very proud to have raised so much for Hope House, which is a vital service for children and their families in Shropshire and the surrounding counties."

"Thank you to the organisers including Ellesmere College teacher Julie Kirk and car club member David Sear, as well as Furrows of Oswestry who sponsored the event and all the volunteers for helping with refreshments and marshalling."

David Sear added: "The 'Classics at the College' event was a huge success. There was a lot of interest and it was a wonderful day, a great opportunity for enthusiasts to get together and show their vehicles. We had many members of the public there too to appreciate the beauty of the cars and help to raise money for such an important local charity. Ellesmere College was a great setting and we hope to repeat the event next year."

Hope House offers respite and end of life care at home and in its two hospices, based in Oswestry and Conwy, as well as counselling and bereavement support for families across Shropshire and beyond.

The service must raise more than £6.3million each year to keep going, with the majority of this coming from fund-raising.
