On Saturday 22nd March 2014 Ellesmere College Choral Society staged a brilliant performance of Fauré's Requiem conducted and directed by Anthony Coupe. The choir were well supported by Oswestry Sinfonia, Gerry Howe on the organ and the Chapel Choir of Ellesmere College.
The concert opened with a wonderful performance of 'Cantique de Jean Racine' by Fauré and this was followed by a number of smaller items, including lovely solos by Alice Tow (Soprano), John Paul (Baritone) and Hannah Griffiths (Harp). The Chapel Choir performed choral music from their liturgical repertoire, including compositions by the Director of Music, Anthony Coupe.
The Requiem was performed in the second half and demonstrated a wonderful dynamic range, from the quietness of 'In Paradisum', to the mysterious and intense 'Offertory' and the majestic 'Agnus Dei'. This was a piece brought to life through the excellence of the musicians taking part, who clearly understood the intentions of the composer.
Ellesmere College Choral Society are a choir dedicated to producing wonderful performances and this was no exception.
