Pupils were celebrating the first results of the summer with the publication of the International Baccalaureate Diploma results today.

The International Baccalaureate Diploma was introduced at the School in September 2006, as an alternative to operate alongside A Level. Mrs. Vicky Pritt-Roberts, Deputy Head Academic, explained, “Students who follow the International Baccalaureate course study six subjects, a course in The Theory of Knowledge, and produce a university standard Extended Essay as part of their assessment. While demanding, the course is highly rewarding and held in high esteem by universities.”

A total of 23 Ellesmere Sixth Form students sat the International Baccalaureate Diploma this year with over 50% achieving the higher level at above 30 points, which is equivalent of 3 A* grades at A Level.  The average overall score for the International Baccalaureate candidates equated to three A grades at A Level, with local girl, Caroline Hayes from Ellesmere, achieving  a top score of 41 points, which is an equivalent of  4 A* grades at A Level.  Caroline was also recently awarded a highly commended in a History essay competition ran by Cambridge University.  Another notable result was that of James Morrison, with an equivalent A level grade of over 3 A*s.

Caroline has chosen Medicine as a career and has a place at Newcastle University Medical School, whilst James is off to University College London to study History.

The Headmaster, Mr. Brendan Wignall, commented on the hard work of all the students, “I am delighted for our pupils who have done so well in the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme. They have certainly worked very hard. They will be exceptionally well prepared for university following the rigorous demands of this course. We look forward now to the publication of the A Level and GCSE results in August.”
