An unusual twist to the success story currently circulating about Rugby Academy is that a group of 3 sets of rugby playing brothers are part of the Schools Rugby Sevens squad that won both the recent Christ College, Brecon, and the North of England Rugby Sevens tournaments that took place in Birkenhead.
Twin brothers, Iwan and Bryn Philips, are playing alongside Tom King, Captain of Rugby, his brother Adam King with George and Jack Baxter being the third set of brothers. The 7th team member is William Goodwin. Together they make up the Schools winning 1st Rugby Sevens team.
The boys played together last term in the Schools 1st XV team and three of the Upper Sixth Form students, George, Bryn and William, who will all be taking their A levels in the summer, are currently in the Midlands U18s squad. Last month they played matches against the South-West and South-East regional teams. Tom King plays for the Irish Exiles.
Alex Murphy, Academy Coach, who himself represented Wales at U16 and U18 said, I am delighted with the boys performance and what they are achieving as a team. It is a tremendous effort by them all. We now have a number of talented boys throughout the age groups here at Ellesmere. The effect of training and playing together, where talent is clustered, lifts the performance of everyone.
Ian Williams, Director of Rugby added, The teams recent wins are well deserved and we are all looking forward to further winning performances as the Sevens season progresses. The team will be battling it out again in the near future at the Under 18 Fylde Tournament hoping to bring back another Cup for the Schools trophy cabinet.
