Become a Sports Leader

This summer, Ellesmere College is offering teenagers from 14 years the opportunity to develop their Sports Leadership skills.

For the second summer Ellesmere will be offering the Level 1 Award in Sports Leadership, a nationally recognised qualification. Last year 6 candidates passed the 5 day course and many have gone on to use the qualification in school or assisting at clubs and holiday activities. The level 1 Award in Sports Leadership gives youngsters from 14 years old an opportunity to start developing their leadership skills. The course includes a number of practical and classroom sessions which give the participants an opportunity to begin looking at planning and preparing basic sports sessions, developing their communication skills and acting as officials and role models through the medium of sport.

This summer the Level 2 Award in Community Sports Leadership will be on offer to candidates 16 years and older. This course will be run for the first time at Ellesmere College and is a highly recognised national award. The qualification teaches similar skills to the level 1 Award but to a higher level for participants who are looking at developing their leadership skills for activities at school, college or clubs. Chris Rogers commented the fun and practical qualification has no entrance requirements or final examinations to sit. However, to complete the course participants need to use the skills learnt to offer 10 hours of voluntary service to the community.

Both of the Sports Leadership courses will be tutored by Ellesmere College Sports Centre Manager, Chris Rogers. Chris has been working as a Sports Leader since completing his Level 2 Award in Community Sports Leadership, 7 years ago whilst at college. Chris has gone on to achieve a number of National Governing Body coaching awards, most noticeable becoming an ECB Level II Coach and Sports Leaders UK tutor. During his time at University Chris worked as a Sports Leader and Activities Supervisor at Whitchurch Leisure Centre and Prees Cricket and Recreation Club. Before joining Ellesmere in 2008 he spent a summer working as a Sports Area Head on a camp in America with international children. Since joining Ellesmere, Chris has developed the popular holiday courses programme which includes Multi-Activities and Adventure+. Chris still leads the activities with his team but this summer will be passing on his wealth of knowledge to future sports leaders.

Anyone interested in participating in one of the courses or have any further questions can contact Chris on 01691 626540 or chris.rogers@ellesmere.com.
