For the second year running, the Porthywaen Silver Band played to a capacity audience alongside the Schools Choral Society at a concert in aid of two local charities.
As part of the Schools long-standing support to Hope House and the Ellesmere and District Age Concern Day Centre, the School recently hosted another Mid-winter Concert. Big School, packed with an audience of over 350 people, was filled with the delightful sounds of music. The Porthywaen Silver Band thrilled their audience with a performance full of sparkle and surprises. Pieces played included, Blue Bayou by Orbison, African Waltz by Mcdermott and Helter Skelter by Lemon, in which Bradley McCulloch, a young talented xylophonist, played a solo.
The Schools Choral Society, conducted by Roger Paul, Director of Music at the School, entertained the audience with a variety of songs, including a rendition of Mozarts Ave Verum Corpus and a Beach Boy medley. Roger commented, The Ellesmere College Choral Society so enjoyed singing with the Porthywaen Silver Band last year that everyone was delighted when they agreed to return to the School, giving us the opportunity of performing with them once again. The Choral Society particularly enjoyed singing the Beach Boys medley with much audience foot-tapping participation.
Anne Wignall, Vice Chairman of Age UK Shropshire, Telford and Wrekin and Secretary of the Ellesmere Friends of Hope House commented, The whole evening was a great success. It was a delight to be in the audience for the Porthywaen Band and the Schools Choral Society concert and I thank everyone who contributed to the evening. Members of the public who supported the event came from far and wide and a massive 1,500 was raised on the night, which will be split between the two charities.
A date has already been set for the 2013 concert which will be on Saturday 2nd February at the School.
