Performing to a packed audience and following many rehearsals during the academic year, the Choral Society Choir joined the Schools Senior and Lower School Choirs for their annual joint concert which also included performances by the Scholars Ensemble and the Schools Orchestra.
Before the Concert, whilst enjoying a glass of wine, members of the audience also had the opportunity to view Sixth Form International Baccalaureate student artwork in Big School Cloisters. The Head of Art, Siobhan Phillips, commented, The art exhibition included work that explores a range of themes including natural forms and portraits. The range of materials was varied including paintings, pastel work and photography.
After the initial welcome and introduction to the evening by Roger Paul, Director of Music, the enthusiastic Lower School Choir, conducted by Rebecca Paul, Music Teacher, performed the opening numbers and set the scene for what was to follow. They performed Any dream will do by Lloyd-Webber and Electricity from the musical, Billy Elliot, by Elton John.
The Schools singing teacher then took to the stage and accompanied by Roger Paul, sang a trio of songs, Ombra mai fu, a largo from Serse by Handel and 2 Gershwin songs, I Got Rhythm from Crazy Girl and Summertime from Porgy and Bess.
The evening of superb musical entertainment also included the School's Choral Society singing Youll never walk alone from the musical Carousel by Rodger and Hammerstein as well as the Beatles song, Penny Lane, by Lennon and McCarthy.
Between performances by the Choirs, the Scholars Ensemble performed William Tell Overture by Rossini, which had won them 1st prize at the recent Oswestry Music Festival. The Ellesmere College Orchestra also performed highlights from Star Wars, Attack of the Clones by John Williams as well as The Lord of the Rings The Return of the King by Howard Shore and Eye of the Tiger from Rocky III by Sullivan and Peterik.
The Senior Choir and Choral Society Choir were conducted by Roger Paul, Director of Music, who commented, All three Choirs have such enthusiastic members who have rehearsed long and hard to perfect their performances.
The evening ended with a Grand Finale featuring all the performers, well over 100 voices, singing a medley from the Phantom of the Opera. Roger Paul concluded, I was delighted how they all performed together so well and like many in our audience, I too look forward to next years concert.
