Audience Delighted by Sixth Form Student Led Fundraising Concert

A recent student led fundraising concert held in the School's Arts Centre raised 1,000 for the Japanese Tsunami Disaster Appeal.

Ami Takahashi, a 2nd year International Baccalaureate student persuaded friends to support her vision of a student led concert which led to a memorable evening of entertainment and Japanese food.

The evening began by Emma Croall, British Red Cross Fundraiser for Shropshire, explaining the charitys current challenges in Japan and how the money raised during the evening would support the immediate need for the creation of 20,000 temporary homes for displaced Japanese citizens.

Performing to a full house in the Arts Centre last night, the Schools Senior Chapel Choir, accompanied by the Director of Music, Roger Paul, opened last nights hugely successful concert with a performance of Somebody to love, the song that won them the Harry Moore Bridger Memorial Cup at the recent Oswestry Music Festival.

Then followed a variety of musical performances from Music Scholars and other musical pupils, including Head Girl, Zoe Evans, performing Prelude by Madsen and Year 8 pupil Will Ainge singing Bachs Ave Maria. The Year 11 talented pianist, George Fradley, accompanied fellow Middle School singers Daisy Clarke, who sang Im not that girl by Wicked and Alice Tow who sang Make you feel my love by Adele. Daisy also sang a duo with Kate Parry, Love the way you lie, with Kate also playing the piano as she sang.

Four talented Sixth Form students all individually sang songs, Luca Kuhn, Anthem from the play Chess, Vicky Schaeff, May it be by Enya, Nia Squirrell, the Eva Cassidy song, Songbird, and then Vicky Tadros closing the concert with her beautiful rendition of Someone like you by Adele.

One member of staff was invited to perform, Lower School Form Tutor, Helen Coney, an accomplished saxophonist, who performed a toe-tapping George Gershwin piece. The performance of a Rachmaninoff classical piece by 2 talented Taiwanese pupils, Muang Luanghvisut, violin, and his sister Memii, piano, was particularly enjoyed by the audience. Laughter also filled the auditorium when Lukas Ost performed a rap song about Shropshire and Ellesmere that he had written himself.

The evening was superbly compered by the Schools Captain of Debating and Prefect, Dominick Coppinger, who had been selected by his peer group to be the evenings Master of Ceremony, and who even ran out of adjectives to describe the string of delightful performances that filled the hour-long programme.

The performance closed by Emma Croall presenting Ami with a certificate of recognition for her fundraising efforts and the serving of refreshments which included pupil made sushi.

Richard Boswell, Director of Performing Arts commented, It has only been a couple of weeks since the disturbing images have appeared on television but in this time Ami and her international team of fellow Sixth Form students have devised a much enjoyed programme of musical entertainment that thrilled their audience and that raised a significant amount of money.
