Ellesmere Public Speakers excel

Following last term's success of winning two preliminary rounds of a National Speaking Competition, three pupils at Ellesmere have qualified for a place in the national final.

Last Saturday, Hadleigh Roberts, Chris Bevan and David Anders-Richards of Ellesmere College travelled to Blackburn, Lancashire to take part in the Business and Professional Women's Public Speaking Competition Northwest Region Final. The boys were the winners of the first county round, held in Oswestry in November 2006. There they beat off Oswestry School, Moreton Hall and Thomas Telford School.

In Blackburn they took on the might of students from other Northwest schools, Stonyhurst College, Clitheroe Royal Grammar and Kirkham Grammar School. The standards set in the competition were extremely high with all pupils from all four schools performing outstandingly. However, the Ellesmere College trio came out on top. Chris Bevan's speech, "Does Violent Entertainment Make For A Violent Society?" won him the accolade of Best Speaker and Hadleigh Roberts succeeded as Best Chair and overall they won Best Team. David Anders-Richards had won the Best Expresser of Thanks in the previous round.

Claire Clewlow, the teacher responsible for coaching the team and who accompanied them to the competition commented, 'This was an excellent competition and it was well worth the journey up to Lancashire. The boys now go through to the National Final to be held at Moreton Hall School on March 31st.We all wish them further success in the final.
