Academic Enrichment: Lower School Welcomes back House Debating

In a first for a number of years - the Lower School House Debating Competition returned to the Arts Centre as part of the Academic Enrichment programme for the students. 

This first debating competition since Covid began was welcomed by a packed theatre of Lower School students and staff with 6 debaters (plus 2 understudies) from each House in Years 7 and 8.

Topics covered were chosen to be in line with the John Muir Award work pertinent to the environmental and conservation based activities: 

2:55 – 3:25 Brownlow (Proposing) v Heywood (Opposing)

"Everyone should grow their own food"

3:30 - 4:00 Phillips (Proposing) v Brownlow (Opposing)

"Science and technology have been bad for the environment"

4:30 – 5:00 Heywood (Proposing) v Phillips (Opposing)

"Physical tourism is bad for the environment and should be stopped"

Results and presentation of Cup/award

Each speech lasts 4 minutes in length and the debates last approximately 30 minutes each as follows:    

• o Proposition speaker 1
• v Opposition speaker 1
• o Proposition speaker 2
• v Opposition speaker 2
• v Opposition speaker 3
• o Proposition speaker 3
• Marks are awarded for confidence at the despatch box, subject knowledge, logical delivery, team work (in answering questions or supporting team mates), etc.

All the students on the debating teams performed exceptionally well - confidently, eloquently and with very well researched topics.
