A-Level & IB Students Score Top Marks

Students at Ellesmere College Sixth Form achieved another great crop of results and can celebrate their A level success. Overall performance saw 60% of all grades awarded to Ellesmere students in the top A*/B grades with the girls raising that bar to nearly 68% of their grades published being in A*AB.

Whilst heartfelt congratulations go to all our students there were several particularly notable performances that are worthy of specific mention.

• Stuart Green (Oswestry) A*A*A Mathematics, Further Maths, Physics
• Tom Lloyd (Overton-on-Dee) A* A* A English Literature, Economics, Geography
• Sebastian McCarthy (Ellesmere) A A A Mathematics, Geography, Economics
• Kasia Kowalczyk (Poland) A* A* A* A Mathematics, Further Maths, Business Studies & Physics
• Aleksandras Calovas (Lithuania) A* A A Mathematics, Chemistry, Physics

The range of degree courses that Ellesmere students choose to pursue is a reflection of the many interests and opportunities they experience at the College from Economics to Engineering to Fine Art. Candidates have been successful in receiving offers from a wide range of Russell Group universities including Cardiff, Leeds, Liverpool and Manchester.

The A level results follow on from those that International Baccalaureate Diploma students received earlier in the summer. The diploma pass level of 24 points is given the equivalent value of BCC grades at A Level. The IB results were excellent with 75% of students achieving more than 30 points, which is equivalent of A*AA grades at A Level. There were outstanding performances by Rebekah Morris-Bailey, Harlech, 37 points, Edoardo Scalvi, Italy, 39 points and Isabella Eckstein, Germany with 40 points.

Ellesmere College recently introduced a new course into the sixth form, the BTEC Sport (Performance and Excellence) to run alongside A level and IB. This two year course was introduced in September 2013 and the first results were published in 2015 with 100% pass rate, repeated in 2016. Will Toft completed the extended diploma, equal to 3 A levels and achieved three distinction stars, which generates 400 ucas points, equivalent to 2A* and 1A at A level, others opted to combine the double A level standard course with a second separate A level.

Brendan Wignall, Headmaster, said "It is always a pleasure to see our students secure impressive grades such as these and it is particularly pleasing to see all who wish to progress to university being able to do so. I congratulate our A level, IB and BTEC students on their achievements All our students completing their studies with us deserve this success. Credit must also go to the excellent work of our teaching staff and, of course, to parents for their constant support and encouragement."
