Swimming Academy Make a Splash at Tri-Meet Weekend!

The Ellesmere College Swimming Academy has been making a splash this month - starting with three key events in the lead up to the British Swimming Championships and Derventio Open meet. The Swimming Academy had athletes participating at the following meets: Edinburgh International Open Meet, ESSA National Championships and the Stockport Metro Spring Meet. These act as pivotal meets as the long-course season is now well under way, making the all-important adjustments after a successful short-course season.

The Edinburgh International Meet featured some of our more senior athletes, competing against those at the top end of the sport with vast international experience. Despite tough competition, Fleur Lewis was second overall in the 1500m Freestyle with a tactically astute swim that left her only a second behind the winner. As a result of that swim, she is now the number one ranked overall swimmer in the country for the event. George Smith proved his all-round acumen with solid swims throughout the three days of competition; the highlight being winning the 200m Breaststroke Junior Final. Andrew Bertoli swam tough throughout the three days of competition, with a strong even-split swim in the 400m Freestyle final. Isaac Dodds and Isaac Hall both made finals and gained valuable experience, Dodds having a very strong 200m Individual Medley and Backstroke in particular, whilst Hall was very solid in his 200m Breaststroke.

The ESSA National Schools championships in Coventry featured some great swims, representing the West Midlands region. Emily Farr represented the team as one of the captains and proved to lead by example, finishing 4th in the 400 Individual Medley and following up shortly after with a strong PB in the 100m Breaststroke. James Raw followed up a strong swim at Stockport on the Friday in the 800m Freestyle, ranking number one in the country for his age with an array of bronze medals in the 200m and 400m Freestyle inter-category, the 4 x 100m inter Freestyle and Individual Medley relays and the open senior mixed Freestyle relay. Oscar Dodds stepped up to the senior category despite still being eligible for the inter category still, with 4th and 5th places in the 200m Individual Medley and the 100m Backstroke respectively. Jake Hutchinson also stepped up to the senior category, finishing 2nd in the 4 x 100m senior Freestyle Relay with a commanding second 50m split, also finishing 4th in the 50m senior Backstroke and 4 x 100m senior Individual Medley Relay respectively.

The Stockport Metro Spring Meet provided plenty of opportunities and finals for our athletes that culminated in 26 gold, 22 silver and 20 bronze medals. Following in the footsteps of his team-mate George Smith, Archie Dandy also honed his all-round abilities that resulted in winning the top male classification for ages 14 and under. Other highlights for Dandy included winning the 100m Backstroke and Freestyle finals in personal best times and a strong 200m Freestyle towards the end of the meet. Millie Wells continued her good progress with strong swims, the 100m and 200m Butterfly being particular highlights, finishing 3rd overall in the 200m Butterfly despite being significantly younger than her nearest competitors. Eleanor Broughton had a brilliant personal best time in her 400m Individual Medley, winning the event overall and being a superbly executed swim, working each second 50m of the 100m splits.

These are very impressive swims, despite the athletes being under a heavy training period whilst these competitions were taking place.

With this in mind, the coaching team are very much looking forward to the upcoming competitions as there are opportunities in abundance when it comes to future events. Whether this be international competition, British / home nation summer championships or a high level external meet, we're extremely happy with the progress that has been made and would like to wish everyone competing at British Championships and the Derventio Open meet the best of luck!
